is it possible for a web designer to steal my idea?

I have an idea for an online business, and I am worried that if I let a web designer program the site, he or she will steal my idea. Is this a possibility?

Anything is possible. That is why you get a lawyer to make an iron-clad contract that you get anyone who designs for you to sign.

It takes a lot of work to get an online business going. I just launched my first online business, PawPosse.com, and let me tell you, just promoting it is a full time job. If your idea is going to work, it’ll take all of your dedication too. A professional web designer doesn’t have the time to take your idea.

A web designer is in the business of designing websites. If you are dealing with a professional company, not someone doing it part time on the side, then they are spending all their time building sites and finding new clients. They see a lot of ideas, probably every day, and if they were the type to steal an idea, you could Google them and find a complaint. Even going to a lawyer won’t stop a crook from being a crook, but do a little homework beforehand on whomever you meet with and you can feel comfortable in trusting them. Ask for referrals. Ask someone with a website who they used. And getting a lawyer to look over contracts is always a good idea.

Its always easy to create an clone site but very hard to make it work, if your site is online with a new idea and with good content with lots of information and promoted very well, you need not to worry. Remember that every one gets competition instantly if they are in web business. Even google, yahoo gets competition from various websites with different search themes. You can find duplicate websites of saadi.com, 99acres.com and many more popular site but the best site always get the most visitors and business. You need to be best, and ready for competition.

Working within the Web Design industry for the last 15 years designing and developing unique online businesses for individuals and blue chip clients alike I agree with the comments about contracts and web design companies being too busy etc which are all true.

In short it is very possible for a web designer to steal your idea, and as mentioned there are a number of ways to protect yourself as already mentioned which as usual can cost a considerable amount of money.

However also knowing many great online ideas are started out by people with limited funds but abundant amounts of dedication and commitment to the concept I would like to highlight a few points to help protect you and your business idea without spending all your savings before you even start.

    1. Before you get to the contract stage you’ll probably need to speak to a number of designers before you’ll find one who can delivery what you need and more importantly one you can work with.

To protect you at this stage find either a free or cheap non-disclosure agreement online and ensure you get anyone you discuss your business idea to sign it prior to disclosing anything.

This is really important as it’s cheap and easy and gives you quite a bit of protection and also makes anyone your dealing with know you’re serious about protecting your idea.

    2. Before agreeing to use any company to develop your web business make sure that you will own the completed site. Many companies will charge you for developing the site but never actually release the copyright to you, this can lead to severe problems down the road should your business become successful and you look to move suppliers as you may have out grown them.

    3. If the development required for the site is considerable you may need to pay staged payments, at these stages request a backup of the work undertaken to protect your investment.

    4. It is highly possible that your business is going to depend on a domain name, make sure you purchase this name yourself as if the web design company registers it in their name you could be in trouble (a link below highlights a number of points to consider when choosing a domain name).

    5. Depending on your available budget, it may be worthwhile finding a developer who is open to the idea of becoming part of the business by providing development services at a reduced cost. If your idea is good this can make sure you get the best development now and the future, the only problem is you need to make sure the developer is capable.

    6. Finally – make sure you don’t just budget for building the website, you need to think just as much about how you are going to market it either through pay-per-click, organic search engines or other means.
