Well, having enough experience being a web designer yourself, it depends. If you work as a team, then chances there’s someone on your team who does the artistic illustrations. On the other hand, if you work on your own, it would be a big plus if you have the artistic touch, although it’s more of a talent. But then again, it’s not far behind for a creative person like you to learn to be artistic as well. You can earn even more if you get the best of both worlds.

Web design is artwork. Web development is programming. You don’t have to be artistic to be a developer, but you do to be a designer. (It helps if you’re both logical and artistic – you can do both the design and the development – but there are more hermaphrodites in this world than there are people with both hemispheres of the brain dominant [which is what a logical artistic person has]. The last one of note was Leonardo daVinci.)

You have many ways to get into becoming a good web designer. You need to sort out the color combinations and the layout of the page. With just non graphics colors too you can make a nice looking website ; the graphics are just a plus point on it.

The artistic skills are just the plus points for web designer. Also to note all the designs you make may not need the artistic looks(eg for bussiness, see google). Creativity is what you need to have.

Anyway for me the desiging is not the graphics i try out the colour combinations and the page layout, graphics are just for topping the cake.

There are others who prefer ‘colorful’ and ‘artistic’ webpages who would strongly require the designer to be creative. But apart from that, there are indeed more people who would want professional, skillful, and ‘well-designed’ web pages. Well-designed depends on how ‘easily’ you navigate through the pages and how you present the product/object/whatever may be required to be presented.

I think being ‘creative’ helps, as well as knowing code and having a grasp of design. Drawing and painting are not necessary as much as design is. I am a fine artist that learned design and I’m a multimedia designer (including web). Knowing design software; Photoshop, Illustrator, ImageReady/fireworks and being able to create images; buttons, backgrounds, banner ads, etc. doesn’t have much to do with painting per se.

Knowing artist tools and techniques -and- being able to code does put you in a unique position though and makes your skill set more attractive.

The less a ‘job’ (web design in this case) has to be piece milled out because you can only provide a portion of the required work, the better.

Having creative ‘hand skills’; drawing and painting, goes a long way.

The job of web designer is very wide. Some will only do code, others will only do graphics and others will do both.

Most people that pay for sites are business owners who really aren’t looking for an artistic look. They’re looking for a business-like page that gets the job done. it also depends on what languages you are fluent in.

i mean, a bit of imagination can’t hurt, but you dont have to be an art major or anything
