Is being a free lance web designer a a good career choice?

I’m getting my associates in Web Production and Design, and I would like to know (hopefully from other web designers) if being a free lance web designer is working out well for you guys. I mean, I wouldn’t mind working for a company of some sort, but honestly I would like the freedom to call my own shots. Thanks!

Free lance means you are responsible for all of the business side things like ensuring your Federal, Social Security and State taxes are paid out of your gross income, paying health insurance, life insurance, dental insurance and any other financial considerations. Health insurance alone will end up costing a lot more than if you were on a company policy (at my last job I paid $65 a month for full medical & dental a comparable plan would cost me $2000/month). Not only that but most tech companies will provide 401K with matching funds (which is free money) as well as educational benefits/paid training and conferences as well as even match funds for any charitable organization donations you make.

Just something to consider.

Honestly, It’s not unless you have good connections.
With the economy, most people are just trying to do it themselves or get friends who will do it for free.
I do it because my mom is a photographer and all her friends are in that business so they always say "Hey, can you make me a website? I’ll pay you for it." That’s the easy part. But you can’t always depend on that kind of people to help your career out because it surely won’t pay the bills. You could work for a company and get a lot of money from it and do extra work on the side that your company doesn’t even have to worry about.
