I want to be a web designer, what should I be doing to get started on that?

What are the major things that a web designer should know/have a good understanding of (for example programming languages or Photoshop)? Should I get started on my portfolio now? I am a sophomore in high school (10th grade). And what electives should I be taking?
Also, how is the pay for a web designer (both free lance and one assigned to a company)

The first thing to consider is that you will be competing with cheap labor from India and other foreign countries. If you really want to get into web programming/design, you will need to know most of the following: HTML, DHTML, XHTHM, XML, XSLT, ASP.NET, VB.NET, C#, Java, JavaScript, Graphics Design (Photoshop, etc…), Web Services, SOAP, AJAX, OOP (Object Oriented Programming), and SQL (TRANSACT and PL/SQL). I would start with HTML and XML, then go from there. The two leading technologies appear to be .NET and Java but the two are generally mutually exclusive.
