Is the media bubble that Americans live in an intended tool to keep us complacent and ignorant materialists?

Do the corporations who control the mainstream media in the U.S. make a conscious decision to keep Americans uninformed and disinterested in actual news (unbiased journalism from a global perspective) by instilling a standard of complacency and narcissism for them to profit from? Or is the relatively new phenomenon of "entertainment news", and the scaling back of foreign bureaus an indirect result of the corporations being solely focused on profits at the expense of real journalism?

Yes and indoctrinate people to be liberal or democrat (same difference). The news media used to be more fair in the past but they have always been biased. Oh yeah and and as far as being a materialist you can solve that by reading the Bible.

Entertainment news is the result of decades of watering down news. The American citizen is kept complacent and uninformed in actual news through propaganda and disinformation. The American citizen is fed the lie that all material goods will make him happy and he must work himself to the bone to buy a bigger house, better car and better everything. Once he has achieved his material goals, then he will be truly happy, because how could he not? In order to keep them complacent they are fed entertainment news which shows them celebrities and uber wealthy living the lifestyle they dream about.

I think so. It may not be a new phenomenon, it’s just part of how electronic entertainment has become more widespread and sophisticated. 500 channels. American Idol. Reality TV. Pay per View. X-Box. Internet porn.

The main goal it seems is to keep the average American financially illiterate. To make him a distracted debt slave where his economic knowledge stops at the question: "How much are the monthly payments?"
