I’m doing an assignment on media hype, mind control and the use of advertisement as a distraction from world issues. I was just curious of what methods are used by Mass Media to distract people from major issues in the world today.
Distraction has long been a tool of the power elite to divert attention from their shady dealings, but I really think in today’s society there is much less complicity and much more idiocy. 24 hour news channels have SO MUCH TIME to fill that they almost have to drone on about stupid stuff like what Sasha and Melia wore to school on their first day. Debbie-downer stories like genocide don’t attract attention of viewers precisely because they are depressing. Ergo, viewers change the channel and CNN brings in less ad revenues. Therefore, they try to attract and hold your attention for as long as possible with saccharine stories designed to titillate rather than educate.
Although, if you want to see something scary, try comparing the pre-WWII Nazi party propaganda with Bush, Jr.’s. That will be an eye-opener for you.

1st. The media reports only what they feel is newsworthy. If it does not have shock and awe or not involved with what is popular it will not report it. Also, the news media tends to end things on a high note on purpose, they want to shock and awe you, then leave you with a great feeling so you will go back and watch.
2nd. Advertising main goal or purpose is to get you to buy, they hype things up to make you feel like you NEED their product, they have no concern for world issues.

The clearest example would be the run-up to the Iraq invasion. No media outlets questioned the reasons given by the US gov’t., or tracked down the sources or authenticity of evidence presented. The media kept focused on the party line, and there was a lot of support generated for the war in the US this way. After the invasion began, some media sources found evidence that was contrary to what was at first presented, and as more and more of these sources came out, support for the war quickly waned, despite the lack of a draft, or war bond rallys or anything that made any personal demands on the US public.

Look at who owns what media company and how many they own if you control all the media then you control everyone’s views.
My brother was in America from Australia for the last election and he though the media was very bias in favour of Obama.
